Another Post about Goal Setting

It’s January. If you’re anything like me, your Facebook feed, homepage, and inbox are inundated with New Year’s speak: “2016 – Your Best Year Yet”… “ New Diet Trends for the New Year”… “ New Year, New You”… “Reach Your Goals in 2016”…blah…blah…blah. So here’s another one. Just kidding. This is about goal setting. But it’s real talk about goal setting. And there aren’t a lot of words. But it is about how to apply the S.M.A.R.T. acronym commonly associated with goal setting when it comes to fitness.
Stay with me…

S – SPECIFIC

WRONG: Lose weight in 2016!
RIGHT: Lose 20lbs

M – Measureable

WRONG: Feel better about my body! Have more energy!
RIGHT: Lose a pants size! Only drink 2 cups of coffee / day!

A – Attainable

WRONG: Lose 50lbs by Spring Break and not e
at any sugar ever again!
RIGHT: Lose 3lbs in January and reduce sugar intake by only eating ice cream (or other treat) once a week!

R – Relevant

WRONG: Run all of the races!
RIGHT: Complete a 10K!

T – Time-bound

WRONG: Lose 10lbs!
RIGHT: Lose 10lbs by April 1st, 2016

So….if we put all of this together. It might sound something like this…
In 2016, I want to
  • Lose 20lbs in 2016; starting with 3lbs in January and continuing with 10lbs total by April 1st.
  • Drop a pants size from 8-10 to 6-8 in by June 1st, 2016.
  • Drink o cups of coffee a day and remember to take my vitamin daily.
  • Reduce my sugar intake significantly by decreasing the desert / sweet treat intake to 1-2 times / week.
  • Complete my first 10K by December 1st, 2016

Other tips…

Write it down. Keep in in front of you. (Mirror, fridge, nightstand, etc.)
– Tell someone else; accountability partners or systems work.
– Be open to reevaluating and adjusting your goals as you go; very rarely are they static.
